AI-Powered Sign Language Translation App Wins Innovation Prize

Friday, 24 October, 2025142 words2 minutes
A Kenyan entrepreneur, Elly Savatia, has developed a groundbreaking app called Terp 360. This innovative tool uses artificial intelligence and 3D avatars to translate spoken words into sign language in real-time.
The app aims to bridge the communication gap for deaf people, especially in accessing essential services where sign language interpreters are often unavailable or too expensive. Savatia explains that many deaf individuals struggle in workplaces, educational settings, and healthcare facilities due to communication barriers.
Terp 360 currently translates English and Swahili into Kenyan Sign Language. The development team worked closely with deaf and hard-of-hearing Kenyans to record over 2,300 signs, including common phrases and words. They used motion sensors to capture the precise movements of signers' hands.
For his innovative solution, Savatia was awarded the prestigious Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, receiving £50,000 to further develop and expand the app's capabilities.
