OpenAI has recently disclosed data regarding the mental health of ChatGPT users. According to their estimates, approximately 0.07% of weekly active users show potential signs of mental health emergencies, including mania, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts.
While OpenAI considers these cases to be rare, critics point out that even this small percentage could represent a significant number of individuals, given ChatGPT's large user base of around 800 million weekly active users.
To address these concerns, OpenAI has assembled a network of over 170 mental health professionals from 60 countries. These experts have helped develop responses in ChatGPT to encourage users seeking help to find real-world support.
The company has also implemented updates to make ChatGPT respond more safely to signs of mental health issues. However, some mental health professionals express concern about the limitations of AI in providing mental health support.
OpenAI acknowledges the seriousness of the issue and states that they are taking steps to improve the safety and effectiveness of their AI in handling sensitive mental health conversations.
