Mexico train crash kills 13 and injures almost 100

A tragic train accident occurred in Mexico's south-eastern Oaxaca region, resulting in 13 fatalities and nearly 100 injuries. The train, carrying 241 passengers and 9 crew members, was traveling between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean when it derailed near the town of Nizanda.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that five of the injured were in serious condition. High-ranking officials, including the Secretary of the Navy, were dispatched to the accident site. Rescue workers were seen assisting passengers from the partially overturned train, which had fallen off the tracks near a cliff edge.

The Interoceanic train service, inaugurated two years ago, was part of a government initiative to boost the region's economy. It aimed to modernize the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and develop the area into a strategic trade corridor. This project included expanding ports, railways, and industrial infrastructure to stimulate economic growth in southern Mexico.
