Pop Music's Bias Towards English Is Fading

The music world is experiencing a significant shift. According to Spotify, songs in 16 different languages appeared in its Global Top 50 last year, more than double the number from 2020. This shows that English is losing its traditional dominance in the music industry.
Bad Bunny, who sings exclusively in Spanish, became the most-streamed artist globally. Meanwhile, genres like Brazilian Funk grew by 36%, K-Pop increased by 31%, and Trap Latino rose by 29%. All these genres earned over $100 million in royalties from Spotify.
Despite this change, English still remains important. Fourteen of last year's top 20 best-selling albums were sung in English. However, South Korean bands and Japanese rock groups are increasingly appearing in global charts. The UK market, though, still lags behind, with only two of its biggest songs featuring non-English lyrics last year.
