Record Snowstorm Hits US East Coast

A major winter storm struck the US east coast on Monday, bringing record-breaking snowfall that disrupted life for millions of people. Parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts received nearly 37 inches of snow, while New York City's Central Park saw more than 19 inches.

The storm caused widespread problems across the region. More than 5,700 flights were cancelled, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. Over 600,000 properties lost electricity, and in Massachusetts alone, nearly 300,000 people were without power. Some areas, like Cape Cod, saw 85% of customers affected.

Travel bans were implemented in several states during the worst conditions. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey warned residents about white-out conditions, saying help would struggle to reach anyone who got stuck. The Boston Globe newspaper couldn't print for the first time in its 153-year history because staff couldn't reach the printing press.

Rhode Island experienced its worst snowstorm ever, with Providence receiving 36 inches—far exceeding the previous record of 28.6 inches from 1978. The storm, known as a bomb cyclone, has now moved toward Canada, though freezing temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week.
